(Is it permissible to air transport aircraft parts removed from the aircraft having UN 2795 Batteries wet filled with alkali installed to a Maintenance Center for recharging?)
Q.
UN 2795 Batteries, wet filled with alkali carries SP A183 which states, ?gWaste batteries and batteries being shipped for recycling or disposal are prohibited from air transport unless approved by the appropriate national authority of the State of Origin and the State of the Operator?h. Would aircraft parts removed from the aircraft being returned for recharging fall under the term ?grecycling?h? (31 Jan 11)
A.
Special Provision A183 pertaining to UN 2795 Batteries, wet filled with alkali is directed to batteries which are to be cannibalized for recycling and does not include aircraft parts being removed from the aircraft for recharging. Shippers must however follow SP A164 where packaging must be carefully done to avoid short-circuits by effective insulation of the exposed terminals, and unintentional activation of the equipment.
