(The LTD QTY limit for UN 3082 Environmentally hazardous substance, liquid, n.o.s. which is a liquid is shown as 30kg G. Why is it not shown in Litres?)
Q.
Solid or powder substances are shown in kilograms and liquids are shown in litres on the list of dangerous goods (See DGR 4.2). However, UN 3082 Environmentally hazardous substance, liquid, n.o.s. which is obviously a liquid is shown in kilograms as 30kg G for LTD QTY limits. Why is it so? Are we correct in assuming that since it is shown in kilograms, we do not need to affix the orientation symbol? (31 Aug 11)
A.
Packing Instruction PI 964 applicable for UN 3082 Environmentally hazardous substance, liquid, n.o.s. is shown in litres as 450L. Since LTD QTY packages are limited by weight to 30kg G maximum, the total weight of the liquid contents plus all the packaging material must not exceed 30kg G.

As specified in DGR 5.0.2.13.3, the orientation label is mandatory for liquids in a combination package. Two labels are required on opposite sides as specified in DGR 7.2.6.4. Therefore when UN 3082 is contained in a combination LTD QTY package, two orientation labels are required. For LTD QTY packages, the rule is to limit the gross weight not to exceed 30kg G. Even if the contents is a liquid, the limit is shown in kilograms.
