(Is the ?gstrong outer packaging?h mentioned in PI 962 for UN 3363 Dangerous Goods in Apparatus/Machinery a UN certified packaging?)
Q.
UN 3363 Dangerous Goods in Apparatus or Dangerous Goods in Machinery specifies the use of Packing Instruction 962. PI 962 states a ?gstrong outer packaging such as?h metal, etc. must be used, but do not show any UN packaging code number. What kind of an outer packaging must we use? Must we use an UN certified package? Can we overpack several of such outer packagings into an overpack? (30 Jun 11)
A.
UN 3363 Dangerous Goods in Apparatus or Dangerous Goods in Machinery specifies the use of PI 962.

PI 962 states that a ?gstrong outer packaging?h must be used. A strong outer packaging means such packaging that will sustain the size and weight of the contents during the entire phase of transportation.

The strength of the packaging must be such that it will safely contain the contents commensurate with its size and its weight. If a fibreboard box is used, the fibreboard must use either a 2-layer or 3-layer board strong enough to hold the contents. The contents must not exceed 0.5L for liquids, 1.0kg for solids and 1.0kgs of gas (only Div. 2.2). Several of such packagings May be overpacked. Mar ings required for overpacks must be applied.
