Q.
What is a ?gDedicated Handling Device?h mentioned in Packing Instruction PI 917? (30 Nov 03)
A.
Dedicated Handling Device (DHD) is a special transport container with which air bag inflators, air bag modules or seat-belt pretensioners May be transported in an unpackaged condition from the manufacturer to the assembly plant of an automobile. The specification requirement of a DHD is as spelled out in PI 917. If these conditions are satisfied, there is no need for a UN specification Mar ing. The DHD itself is considered to be an outer packaging. If a DHD is not used, the outer packagings must meet PG III performance standards but do not have to be a UN specification packaging. Any one of the listed drums, jerricans or boxes May be used.
