(Salvage Packagings)
Q.
According to DGR 5.0.1.6.1, it states ?gDamaged, defective, leaking or non-conforming packages, or dangerous goods that have been spilled or leaked May be transported in SALVAGE PACKAGINGS meeting the requirements of 5.0.1.6.2 and Subsection 6.8.?h Does this provision apply for shipments prior to being tendered to the airline for air carriage? Or does this provision only apply to shipments that are damaged en route? Further, can a non-specification package be used as long as it satisfies the requirements of DGR 6.8? (30 Nov 03)
A.
This provision serves damaged or defective packages found en route and does not refer to faulty packages found prior to being tendered for air carriage. Faulty packages will be rejected at time of acceptance by the first carrier. When faulty packages are found en route, only the shipper is authorized to repack the faulty package into a Salvage Packaging, and only the shipper is authorized to prepare the new Dec aration. The airline can use this provision only for company cargo of which the airline is the shipper. A salvage packaging is a UN specification packaging, and use of a non-specification packaging is not authorized.
