(Why is Radioactive material Excepted Package called ?gL?h Type in Japan)
Q.
Why is the package for Radioactive Material Excepted Package coded as ?gL?h Type Package in Japan? What are they called in other countries? (11 Jan 04)
A.
The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) have designated the packages to contain radioactive material as ?gExcepted Package?h, ?gIndustrial Package?h, ?gType A Package?h, ?gType B Package?h and ?gType C Package?h according to the level of radioactivity the packages are designed to contain. Finding it difficult to abbreviate the words ?gExcepted Package?h, the Japanese authorities selected the letter ?gL?h to indicate that the package was intended for radioactive material with low activity. The rest of the world use the IAEA description.
