(When must quantity be shown on packages)

We understand that the PSN and UN number of the contents must be shown on the surface of the packages. Please explain when do we have to show the quantity of dangerous goods and how should it be shown in net quantity as well as in gross weight.  (31 Jan 10)

The rule is shown in DGR 7.1.5.1 (c), (d) and (e). Before addressing the requirement for quantity, the PSN and UN number must be shown on the outside surface of the packages. The quantity must be shown following the rules explained below. The net quantity must be expressed in kilograms and litres. If the blue page indicates that a substance is regulated as ?ggross weight?h, thence the gross weight of the package must be shown with the letter ?gG?h behind the kg.

To start out, following applies to a shipment with a single package:

(1)_Class 1 Explosives - Must show NET QUANTITY of Explosives and the GROSS WEIGHT of the package. [DGR 7.1.5.1 (c)]

(2)_Dry Ice - Must show the Net Quantity of Dry Ice. ?kDGR 7.1.5.1 (e)?l

(3)_Radioactive Material - Must show only the PSN and UN number. The quantity is shown on the Hazard Category Label in Bq values alongside the Symbol of the Radionuclide. ?kDGR 10.7.1.3; 10.7.3.3?l

When there are more than 2 packages in one shipment:
(1)_Packages containing Classes 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 and 8. ?kDGR 7.1.5.1 (d)?l
(2)_If multiple package shipment contain identical PSN, UN number, PG, chemical and physical form and quantity, there is no need to show the quantity on the packages. ?kDGR 7.1.5.1 (d)?l
(3)_Indication of quantity for Class 9 dangerous goods are optional. ?kDGR 7.1.5.1 (d) Note?l

Caution: Should a shipment consist of 1 package of DG and another package of non-DG, the rule for a single package applies.
