(AWB entries required when shipping Lithium Batteries)
Q.
When shipping Lithium Batteries as non-regulated following Section II of PI 965, 966, 967, 968, 969 and 970, there are four items that must be noted on the AWB. Where on the AWB should these information be entered? If there is no space on the AWB, can we show them on a Sep rate sheet of paper and staple it to the AWB? Is there a fixed format? Furthermore, in the case of Lithium batteries contained in equipment, there is a provision saying if the cells do not exceed 4, and the batteries do not exceed 2, there is no need to use the Lithium Battery Handling Label, and when the Handling Label is not required, thence there is no need to enter the 4 items on the AWB. Is this true?  (31 Jan 10)
A.
There are 4 items which must be shown on the AWB. They are, (1) that the package contains lithium cells or batteries, (2) that the packages must be handled with care and that a flammability hazard exists if the package is damaged, (3) that special procedures should be followed in the event the package is damaged, to include inspection and repacking if necessary, and (4) a telephone number for additional information. As it is a mandatory requirement to show the contents of the shipment on the AWB in all cases, (1) is attained very simply. Enter the words ?gHandle with care. Flammability exists if package is damaged.?h in the Handling Information box of the AWB, and (2) is satisfied. For the rest of the required entries, there is no fixed place nor any fixed form. KAC has designed a form (shown below) which can be completed and stapled to the AWB to satisfy the requirements of Section II of the PIs.

As for lithium cells and batteries installed in the equipment, unless the number exceeds 4 cells or 2 batteries, there is no need to affix the Lithium Battery Handling Label, and there is no need to enter the 4 items of information, except for the description of the goods being shipped. This is a standard requirement when issuing an AWB. The entries ?gLithium ion batteries, Not Restricted, PI967?h or ?gLithium metal batteries, Not Restricted, PI970?h as applicable must be entered on the AWB.
