(We have a radioactive material, excepted package instruments which also contains other dangerous goods. We need your guidance.)
Q.
The cylinder product is an instrument. The cylinder has a vacuum tube containing excepted radioactive material (Tritium in gas form). We are shipping two cylinders in one steel outer box. Each of the two cylinders have the same activity of 0.2TBq. The dose rate of the excepted package does not exceed 5μSv/h at any point on its external surface.

Each cylinder also contains 0.3kg of UN1080 Sulpher hexafluoride. Total quantity of UN1080 Sulphur hexafluoride for the two cylinders in the steel box is 0.6kg.

Kindly advise how should we describe this shipment on the Shipper’s Declaration. (31 Mar 22)
A.
(a) So part of the shipment is UN2911 Radioactive material, excepted package - instruments. A2 value of Tritium (Gas form) is 40TBq, and per Table 10.3.C 0.2TBq each is within item limits and package limits. The Dose Rate on any point of the external surface is also within limits.

(b) The two cylinders also contain UN1080 Sulphur hexafluoride Div. 2.2, 0.3kg per each cylinder. The quantity limits for UN1080 as Excepted Package is E1, i.e. inner limit is 30g and outer limit is 1kg. The quantity of UN1080 per cylinder is 0.3kg which is more than the inner package limit of 30g. We must use the PAX limit of 75kg using PI 200.

(c) As conclusion you will follow Special Provision SP A130 (b) and show as follows on the Shipper’s Declaration. UN1080 // Sulphur hexafluoride, Radioactive material, excepted package – instruments // Div. 2.2 // 1 steel box x 0.6kg // PI200 // SP A130

(b) The Radioactive material, excepted package label is not required.
