(A question on the interpretation of Special Provision SP A67.)
Q.
The question pertains to a Portable Speaker housing a lead wet battery as checked baggage. According to the manufacturer’s “Guidance for Use”, the battery is rechargeable, it is a lead wet battery, and can be used as a power source, and may be loaded in any position, upright or sideways. From these description, we think we can determine the battery is “non-spillable”. Or, do we have to dismantle the battery to confirm it being “non-spillable”? As long as we confirm that the requirements of IATA A67 are met, we consider the Portable Speaker acceptable as checked baggage. The fact that the wet battery is installed in the Portable Speaker and that the position may be upright or sideways, we can safely consider it as a non-spillable battery. Please give us your guidance.  (31 Aug 21)
A.
From all available information provided, it is difficult to ascertain whether the battery meets the requirements spelled out in SP A67 and be considered as “non-spillable”.I advise you to contact the manufacturer and have them give you a statement of confirmation that the battery satisfies the Vibration Test as well as the Pressure Differenttial Test spelled out in SP A67.
