(A question on UN specification packagings.)
Q.
The question is about the UN specification packaging bearing the UN mark as reproduced below. “Y 1.4” is indicated however what is the allowable volume. Is there a method to calculate?

A.
This is an 1A1 UN specification non-renovable head steel drum which has satisfied the required UN standards as spelled out in DGR 6.2.1, its test conducted by Nihon Hakuyohin Kentei Kyokai (Abbreviated as J/HK – Research Institute of Marine Engineering - DGR Appendix E.2 Japan). The liquid dangerous goods to be PG II or less, relative density 1.4 or below, the hydraulic test pressure which the steel drum has shown to withstand was maximum 100 kPa。1A1 UN drums may have a maximum volume capacity of 450 L (see DGR 6.2.1.9), and the actual volume capacity of a given 1A1 UN drum will be indicated on its manufacturer’s specification sheet, or the UN test certificate or may be indicated on the drum itsef.

The UN specification indicates that the maximum volume is 450 L, however smaller volume drums are in the market. Therefore, for volume you will need to check the manufacturer’s specification papers, or the UN test certificate, or inspect the markings on the drum itself.
