(Need advice for Compass Assembly containing dangerous goods.)
Q.
The Compass Assembly to be shipped contains 3 litre of Methanol. We would appreciate your advise on the questions mentioned below regarding Magnetized Material having dangerous goods.

(1) If this Compass Assembly meets the below listed criteria, the Compass Assembly can be declared as UN1230 Methanol on DGD without mentioning the Magnetized Material. The Magnetized Material label, however must be affixed to the package.
“Magnetized materials with field strengths causing a compass deflection of more than 2 degrees at a distance of 2.1m but not more than 2 degrees at a distance of 4.6 m (equivalent to 0.418 A/m or 0.00525 Gauss measured at a distance of 4.6 m) are not subject to any other requirements in these Regulations when carried a cargo.”

(2) If this Compass Assembly has a field strength exceeding 2 degrees of compass deflection at a distance of 4.6 m, we will need to delare both UN1230 Methanol and UN2807 Magnetized Material.

Kindly advise.  (31 Mar 21)

Your interpretation is correct.

(1) If the magnetized material has a field strength causing not more than 2 degrees compass deflection at a distane of 4.6 m, you may declare the Compass Assembly as UN1230 Methanol only. You must, however, comply with items (a), (b), (c) and (d) of Packing Instruction PI 953. Provided the words “Magnetized Material” and the number of packages (unless these are the only packages within the consignment) are shown on the AWB, there is no need to declare it on the DGD. The package must have the Magnetized Material label affixed, and loading precautions of DGR 9.3.9 must be observed.

(2) If the magnetized material has a field strength causing a compass deflection of more than 2 degrees at a distance of 4.6 m, you need to acquire the prior approval of the State of Origin and the State of the Operator and must declare both UN1230 Methanol and UN2807 Magnetized Material.
