(Can we ship Lithium Metal Rechargeable Batteries on a Passenger Aircraft to the United States?)
Q.
We hear there are Lithium Metal Batteries which can be recharged. USG-02 strictly regulates Lithium Metal Pr Mar Batteries and bans transportation on passenger aircraft. But can we ship Lithium Metal Secondary Batteries on a passenger aircraft? What r Mar s should we write on the AWB to alert the airline personnel that it is permissible on passenger aircraft? (28 Feb 10)
A.
According to available data, secondary rechargeable batteries using lithium metal would show a ?gdendrite effect?h which is questionable from safety reasons and therefore lithium metal secondary batteries are not in practical use. ?gDendrite effect?h means metal substance will stain the electrode when there is an electric Dec mposition. If it has a safety problem, such should not be loaded on a passenger aircraft alike lithium metal pr Mar batteries. Furthermore, USG-02 is intended to regulate Lithium Metal Batteries rather than put the restriction on Pr Mar batteries, so the answer is they are not loadable on passenger aircraft.
