(9.3.13.1 uses the term “hold”. Does it refer to the larger hold and not the smaller compartment?)
Q.
DGR 9.3.13.1 uses the term “hold”. Should we take this as the larger space on the aircraft or as “compartment” which is a smaller section of a “hold”.  (30 Nov 19)
A.
It does not make a difference whether the term “hold” or “compartment” is used when the purpose is to describe that carbon dioxide gas is heavier than air and therefore concentrate on the lower level of the aircraft hull. The use of the term “hold” and “compartment” becomes decisive when it is used to allow stowage of a certain quantity of dangerous goods.

According to IATA Airport Handling Manual, the definition of a “HOLD” spells: “A hold is the space within an aircraft confined by ceiling, floor, walls and bulkhead used to carry load”, and the definition of a “COMPARTMENT” spells “A compartment is a space within the hold”.

In the DGR, the term “compartment” is used with the meaning of a “hold”.
