(Why is the 3-etter code for Live Animals, “AVI” ?)
Q.
Transport of Live Animals are governed by IATA Live Animals Regulations. Why is the 3-letter code not LIV or LVA ? Why is it “AVI” ? (30 Sep 19)
A.
In the early stage of aviation, France was the leading country for aviation. The original text of the 1929 Warsaw Convention is written in French. The United States must wait until World War II to bcome the leading aviation nation. The original text of the 1944 Chicago Convention is written in English. Aviation terminology in the early days were in French.

“AVI” is the last remaining legacy of France, the then leading nation of aviation. The French word for animals (plural form) is “Animaux” (plural form) and the French word for “Live” is “Vivants” (plural form), thus “Animaux Vivants”. Taking the acronym the 3-letter code is “AVI”. France is insisting the keep “AVI” and is also vigorously pushing Airbus in an attempt to rise its level in aviation.
