(Questions on Radioactive Material LSA and SCO.)
Q.
① LSA material UN 2912, UN 3321 and UN 3322:
Other than the required markings of DGR 10.7.1.3.3, is the Class 7 Hazard Label required? If yes, do we write the Contents, Activity and TI?

② SCO UN2913:
How do we do the marking and labellig for this package?

③ Permissible Gross Weight, if gross weight of package exceeds 50 kg:
What is the reason behing this weight? Why is it required and how should we explain this? (31 Jul 19)
A.
① Hazard labels for LSA material, UN2912 (LSA-I), UN3321 (LSA-II) and UN3322 (LSA-III):
Not only those required marks of DGR 10.7.1.3.3 “Industrial Package Specification Marks”, you must also place the required marks of DGR 10.7.1.3.1 “General”. Class 7 Hazard Labels are also required as stated in DGR 10.7.3.1 “Hazard Label”. As mentioned in that subsection, the required hazard label is indicated in Column D of the Blue Pages. The Class 7 hazard label must show label markings as spelled out in DGR 10.7.3.3 “Label Marking” (i.e. 10.7.3.3.1 “Contents”; 10.7.3.3.2 “Activity” and; 10.7.3.3.3 “Transport Index (T.I.)”.

② Marking and Labelling for UN 2913 Radioactive material, surface contaminated object (SCO-I):
The answer is the same as Answer ① above. Markings of DGR 10.7.1.3.1 “General” and of DGR 7.1.3.3 “Industrial Package Specification Marks” are both required. Column D of the Blue Page indicates that Class 7 Hazard Label is required. Label markings for Contents, Activity and Transport Index (TI) are the same as mentioned in Answer ① above.

③ Gross weight exceeding 50 kg:
I am given to understand that this 50 kg benchmark was chosen to warn handlers to get a forklift than trying to lift the radioactive material package without mechanical help. This was to prevent spine damage. As you know packages containing radioactive material are heavy despite its size since the package incorporates heavy shielding material. A very small package can easily weigh more than 100 kg !!
