(A question on how to ship lithium metal batteries not installed but packed with device.)
Q.
Our merchandise is called “Unit” but all components including the lithium metal battery used as power source are not assembled but individually packed and placed together as one unit. With such composition, we are not sure whether we should declare the lithium metal battery as UN3090 or not. Please guide us how to ship this “Unit”.  (30 Jun 19)
A.
Your “UNIT” is considered dangerous goods and the correct Proper Shipping Name is UN3091 Lithium batteries packed with equipment (Packing Instruction PI 969). Since all components as well as the lithium metal battery are packed with the devise, the UNIT is not UN3090 Lithium metal batteries (PI 968) nor UN3091 Lithium metal batteries contained in equipment (PI 970) . Whether Section I or Section II of UN3091 Lithium batteries packed with equipment (PI 969) applies depends on the contents of Lithium Metal. When shipping, you need to strictly follow all the applicable stipulations of PI 969.
