(Use of Table 3.3.A to assign PG for Flammable Liquid)
Q.
If a given substance has an Initial Boiling Point of 33C and a Flash Point of 68C, should this go under PG I or should it be considered ?gNot Restricted?h? What should be the first thing we look at? IBP and then FP or another way? (28 Feb 10)
A.
In determining the PG for Class 3 substance, you would first consider the "initial boiling point". If the "initial boiling point" is equal to or less than 35C, the substance is PG I. If the "initial boiling point" is in excess of 35C, then you determine the PG by checking the "flash point". The "hyphen" indicated in the matrix against PG I indicates that "flash point" is not considered in the determination of PG if the substance has an "initial boiling point of 35C. If there is a substance with an IBP of 33C and FP of 68C, this would automatically be assigned to PG I., although in reality, I wouldn't think there would be such a queer material. As stated above, when you use Table 3.3.A, you must first look at the IBP, and then the FP.
