(Interpretation of SP A151)
Q.
I am a bit confused with the interpretation of SP A151 assigned to dry ice. When A151 can be applied, will the lifting of the 200kg MAX be ?gper package?h or ?gper ULD?h? For instance, if a box containing 300kg of Dry Ice is loaded on an ULD eligible for SP A151, is this box of dry ice considered exempt per SP A151?  (28 Feb 10)
A.
SP A151 is a special provision which applies to dry ice used as refrigerant for non-DG such as meat and Mar ne products loaded onto an ULD or pallet (refer 3rd bullet point under DGR 5.0.1.3) and is therefore considered as being ?gper ULD?h. Dry ice is expected to be randomly placed on top of the boxes or wrappings containing meat or Mar ne products. It is not envisaging that 300kg of dry ice would be packaged inside a box. There could be multiple boxes/wrappings of meat or Mar ne products each containing a certain quantity of dry ice. These also are considered eligible for SP A151 application. Do not overlook to have ventilation openings at the lower side of the plastic sheets covering the ULDs/pallets. The net quantity of dry ice loaded on one ULD/pallet must be communicated to the airline by entering the net quantity on the AWB.
