(A question on shipping Section IA and Section IB Lithium batteries on one single AWB. How should the declaration be prepared?)
Q.
UN 3480 Lithium ion batteries Section IA packed in one package, and Section IB packed in another package are to be shipped on one AWB (2 packages). The declaration was prepared indicating PI 965 IB in the Packing Inst./Authorization columns as indicated in DGR Figure 8.1.P (Example 12) but no notation was made for the Section IA package and was simply entered as PI 965. The airline told us to enter PI 965 IA for the Section IA package to clear any doubt on the contents of the the package in question. We feel this is an excessive requirement not mentioned in the regulations. Please give us guidance. (31 Aug 18)

According to the DGR, it is required for Section IB shipments to indicate PI 965 IB in the Packing Inst./Authorization columns but for Section IA shipments it is not necessary to add the notation of IA to PI 965. I assume the accepting airline wanted to avoid unnecessary questioning downstream and suggested to show IA on the Section IA package. I believe the request was made to avoid unneeded questioning. After all, the airline may request additional requirements per DGR 1.2.4 (b) if needed. I believe for the sake of smooth transit, it is advisable to follow this request.
