(A question on UN 2800 and PI 872.)
Q.
According to DGR 4.2 List of Dangerous Goods, Packing Instruction PI 872 applies to UN 2800 Batteries, wet, non-spillable. The maximum permissible quantity per package is shown as “No Limit”. A certain party claims that there is a cap of maximum weight 400kg per package for air transport. So, even if the blue page may say “No Limit”, you cannot exceed 400kg. Is this true? (31 Mar 18)
A.
There is no such 400kg maximum ceiling applicable to air transport. The maximum permissible quantity per package is indicated in DGR 4.2 List of Dangerous Goods or in each corresponding the Packing Instruction in Section 5. For solids, it is indicated in kilograms, and for liquids in litres. Some show “No Limit”.

PI 872 applies for UN 2800 and the quantity is indicated as “No Limit”.
DGR 5.0.1.2 (c) states, “for all packages, shipper must restrict the overall quantity per package to the limits specified in Columns H, J or L of the List of Dangerous Goods (as applicable) or to the design limit for the package whichever is more restrictive.”
