(A question on shipping UN 3091 Lithium metal batteries contained in equipment.)
Q.
When shipping UN 3091 Lithium metal batteries contained in equipment as Section II of PI 970, since it is not restricted, we will apply the Lithium Battery Handling Label on the package surface, and enter the words “NOT RESTRICTED” on the AWB, and intend to enter the wordings stipulated, but, please advise whether it is necessary to show the markings (Shipper, Consignee, UN number, Proper Shipping Name, Quantity) on the surface of the package. The lithium contents of the battery is 0.12g. (30 Jun 16)
A.
It is not correct. First of all, the lithium metal cell must be contained in the equipment. The lithium contents must not exceed 1g for cells, and 2g for batteries. The equipment must be packed in a strong rigid outer package.
If only 2 or less package is shipped, and each package do not contain more than 4 cells or 2 batteries, the Lithium Battery Handling Label is not required.

No Declaration is required. The AWB must carry the 4 required items listed in PI 970 (1. Contents, 2. Must handle with care, 3. If damaged, then inspection and repairs are needed, and 4. Phone number where additional information can be obtained) or otherwise written on an attached sheet, and the words ”Lithium metal batteries in compliance with Section II of PI 970” must be shown in the Commodity Box of the AWB.

Standard entries on the surface of the package is unchanged as per DGR 7.1.4.1. UN number, Proper Shipping Name, Quantity, full name and address of Shipper and Consignee must appear on the outer package.
