(What is the life span for packagings listed in Table 5.0.C?)
Q.
Plastic drums and jerricans (1H1, 1H2, 3H1, 3H2) have a life span of 5 years. What is the life span of all other packagings shown in Table 5.0.C? When and how should these packagings be re-tested and how should they be re-used? (31 Mar 10)
A.
All UN packagings shown in Table 5.0.C. including 1H1, 1H2, 3H1 and 3H2 must be tested before they are used. The principle of testing is explained in DGR 6.0.1.3 and 6.0.1.4, and the method of testing is explained in DGR 6.3 (general packagings), 6.4 (cylinders) and 6.5 (packagings for infectious substances).

If you are re-using a package or overpack, you must follow DGR 5.0.1.4 and its Note. In the Note, it says ?gwhen a package meets the conditions of 5.0.2.5?h, it May be re-used. The shipper must also have access to the information required in 6.0.1.4. DGR 5.0.2.5 clearly states that any packaging must be ?gas new?h in quality and strength..

UN cylinders must be tested according to PI200 and DGR 6.4. Packagings for Infectious substance, Category A must be tested according to DGR 6.5..

Plastic drums and plastic jerricans have a life span of 5 years from the date of manufacture. All other packagings do not have a prescribed life span but they must be inspected and tested each time before re-use that they are just as new in quality and strength.
