(When shipping UN 3091 Lithium metal batteries contained in equipment, what is the weight we should enter on the DGD. Will it be the net weight of the battery?)
Q.
A shipper wants to ship UN 3091 Lithium metal batteries contained in equipment using PI 970. Should we enter the net weight of the battery on the DGD? Is there a change to the information we must show on the AWB? When the lithium contents of the battery cannot be ascertained, we are thinking to ship it as CAO using Section I. Is this permissible?  (31 Jan 13)
A.
The quantity to enter on the DGD for UN 3091 Lithium metal batteries contained in equipment PI 970 (whether Section I or Section II) is the net weight of the battery. The weight of the equipment or the weight of the packaging material must not be included.

The information which must be entered on the AWB has not changed except for the requirement to enter the same information of Section IB. It is hard to believe that lithium contents cannot be identified. You must check for the lithium contents as you may go beyond the limit. Refer A99. It is difficult to understand that the shipper does not know the lithium contents. I urge you to double check, and if otherwise, I would recommend you to refuse the shipment for inadequate information.
