(I need guidance on UN 2809 Mercury contained in manufactured articles.)
Q.
In shipping UN 2809 Mercury contained in manufactured articles, I understand that a gross weight indication is necessary for articles. However, PI 869 in the first bullet point under Additional Packing Requirements, it says “for electron tubes, mercury vapour tubes and similar tubes, the shipper must indicate the quantity of mercury on the DGD”. Does this mean that I need to show both the gross weight and the net weight? (30 Nov 12)
A.
For the balance of this year 2012, please enter the net quantity of mercury and the gross weight of the manufactured article when declaring UN 2809 Mercury contained in manufactured articles. The first bullet point of Additional Packing Requirements in PI 869 states that the net quantity of mercury must be shown on the DGD. DGR 7.1.6.9.2 Step 6, subparagraph (d) 3. dictates that the Gross Weight of the article must also be shown on the DGD.

Therefore, the DGD will look like this:

UN2809 PSN 8 III One Fibreboard box 30g 869
            Gross weight 3 kg

Effective January 1, 2013, a new UN number will be assigned and a Div. 6.1 subsidiary risk will be added.

UN 3506 Mercury contained in manufactured articles 8 (6.1) PI 869
Gross weight indication will be limited to LTD QTY shipments and therefore no longer required on other category shipments.

The weight to be entered on the DGD in 2013, is the weight of the manufactured article per Note 1 to the Table shown in PI 869 to be shown as “net quantity”.
