(Please explain about the overpack of non-regulated lithium batteries.)
Q.
When we overpack Lithium ion batteries following Section II of PI 965, is it necessary to Mar “OVERPACK” on the outer surface of the overpack? Is there a weight limitation for the overpack? (31 Jul 12)
A.
As written in Section II “Overpack” of PI 965, if the completed packages contained inside the overpack cannot be seen from the outside, it is necessary to reproduce all the Mar ings and labels on the outer surface of the overpack. Furthermore, the Lithium Battery Handling Label and the word “OVERPACK” must also be shown on the outer surface of the overpack.
If crates or shrink-wrap is used as an overpack and all the contents can be clearly seen from the outside, there is no need to reproduce the Mar ings/labels on the outer surface of the overpack.
For packages made according to Section II of PI 965, individual packages have a weight limit, however there is no weight limit for the overpack as long as it is within the physical limits of the overpack container.
In addition, general rules on overpacks are shown in DGR 5.0.1.5; overpack Mar ings are written in DGR 7.1.4; and overpack labeling is referred to in DGR 7.2.7.
