(When shipping UN 3091 Lithium metal batteries contained in equipment and the installed battery is less than 100Wh and the quantity is less than 2, do we need the Lithium battery handling label and the additional entry on the AWB?)
Q.
A shipper wants to ship UN 3091 Lithium metal batteries contained in equipment by using PI970. The batteries are less than 100Wh, and the quantity installed is less than 2. I understand the Lithium battery handling label is not required and the additional entry of Lithium metal batteries in compliance with Section II of PI970 is not required on the AWB. What if this was entered on the AWB? (31 Jan 13)
A.
When shipping UN3091 Lithium metal batteries contained in equipment, and the batteries are less than 100Wh and the quantity is less than 2, there is no need to affix the Lithium battery handling label. It is also not necessary to enter the words: Lithium metal batteries in compliance with Section II of PI970 on the AWB. If the words are entered on the AWB, it would not harm safety but the shipper should be advised from the next shipment, not to enter the words as they are not necessary. To avoid unwanted confusion, it is far better to follow the rules as written.
